Josh “Pistachio” Somers is a senior majoring in Chemistry, planning on going to medical school in his future. He enjoys playing sports, hiking, fishing, taking scenic pictures and spending time with friends. This will be his fourth year returning to camp and he is super excited to be part of the coordinator team! Pistachio is looking forward to being in the director role this year and hopes to continue to grow the chapter and spread the Kesem magic!
Meera “Meerkat” Patel is from Kentucky and is a senior studying Neuroscience and Philosophy. After graduation, she wants to go to law school, where she will concentrate in health law. Fun facts about her are that she is scared of dogs, loves to dance, and enjoys stepping outside her comfort zone. She is really excited to continue to spread the magic of Kesem throughout the year and especially at camp when everything will come together for a week of fun!
Elliott “Jelly” Toy is a Senior studying Machine Learning and Statistics. He has been involved with Camp for the past 3 years and is excited to be involved again for his 4th and final year! He likes to listen to 80s music, get Bubble Tea with friends, and do all kinds of dance, especially Ballroom! He spent this past summer in New York and his favorite thing to do there was walk in Central Park and eat Halal food! His favorite thing about camp is seeing all the campers be silly and having fun!
Amy “Bubbles” Lopata is a sophomore studying Statistics and Machine Learning. She spends a lot of her time working at preschools and daycare centers and conducting research at the Infant Cognition Lab at Carnegie Mellon. Bubbles is a kid at heart. She loves to force her friends to go outside to jump in puddles or play in the snow. She is so excited to be a part of organizing camp because it is a place where everybody can bring out their inner child!
Bryanna “Sunflower” Walker is a junior studying Voice Performance. She enjoys camping, drawing, performing in musicals, playing with her puppies and cats, listening to music, working as a princess for birthday parties, drinking tea, making people smile and hanging out with friends and family! She has been a part of Camp Kesem CMU since her freshman year. In her second year on the board, she is very excited to continue to spread CK love & magic throughout the year & at camp!
Ivy “Pepper” Zhong is a junior studying Business Administration. She is from Portland (the one in Oregon, not Maine). In her free time, she likes to binge watch Netflix and take naps. She is an avid lover of Chows Chows and Corgis and can stay on Instagram for hours just watching dog videos. She is also a big fan of spicy ramen, Harry Styles and 14 hours of sleep per day.
Sam “Nugget” Chinn is sophomore from California studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Economics. He enjoys dunking both basketballs and chicken nuggets in his free time. Fun facts about him include his inability to pronounce the word “gnocchi” and that he eats five meals a day. If you hadn’t noticed, he really likes food too. Nugget is really excited to come back to Camp Kesem for his second year!
Henry “Rooster” Peck is a senior studying Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, with work focused in medical device design and robotics. He is a trivia buff, soccer player, and a crazy NHL hockey fan. Before joining the CK, he spent two years leading local Kesem fundraising efforts through partner organizations on campus. He is looking forward to deepening his involvement in Kesem through the coordinator board and can’t wait for another year of Camp magic and CK love!
Jeff “Donut” Kang is a junior studying Ethics, History, and Public Policy. In his free time, he likes to play many instruments, including the trumpet, french horn, and guitar. He also enjoys watching basketball and hockey. Last summer was his first time at camp, and he’s excited to go back next year!
Victoria Ho is a freshman from Boston studying Neuroscience. She enjoys singing, jigsaw puzzles, and foreign languages. Some of her other interests include musical showtunes, opera, and Game of Thrones. This is her first year at Camp Kesem, and she is thrilled to be a part of the team!
Elizabeth “Lala” La is a sophomore studying Cognitive Science. When she is not in class, she is likely to be seen spending her time interacting with babies (yay Infant Cognition Lab!), singing, chewing on ice, teaching computer science, getting crafty, or thrift shopping! This will be Lala’s second year being part of the Kesem family, and she can’t wait to help plan events throughout the year and come up with cool activities for camp!
Shrutika “Tiki” Ruhela is a junior studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is from the Boston area, and loves traveling, playing volleyball, and being outside. This will be Tiki’s second year at Camp Kesem, and she is really excited to be helping plan camp this year!
Alex “Pyro” Xu is a sophomore from the Bay Area studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. He enjoys getting involved with many organizations on campus and currently spends time outside of class ballroom dancing and singing in his acapella group. He is hopeful about the future of Camp Kesem, knowing that counselors give it their all to ensure the campers have a blast!
Suanna “Sunny” Moron is from Virginia and is a sophomore studying Biology and Psychology. She loves baking in her free time, trying out different Pinterest recipes and reading all the latest books. She is super excited to help make the magic happen at Kesem, throughout the year and at camp!
Miléna DeGuere is a freshmen from Los Angeles studying global studies history and statistics. She loves traveling with her family and exploring new cultures and areas, and especially recommends visiting local museums wherever you go. This is her first year working with Camp Kesem and she is already so excited to start preparing for the summer, getting everything in place, and hopefully meeting some families and kids throughout the year!
Alia “Alligator” Friedman is a sophomore studying cognitive neuroscience and human-computer interaction. She enjoys playing with children, reading and just plain running around. She is excited to be treasurer and to have a super awesome Kesem year!
Niki “Noodle” Sareen is a Junior Biology and Psychology major. In the future she hopes to become a physician with a pediatric specialty to make a difference in the lives of others. She enjoys playing tennis and traveling with friends and family. Niki loves working with children and is really excited to be a part of the magic of Camp Kesem again!
James “Coco” Summers is a sophomore studying Business Administration and International Relations and Politics. He enjoys playing all kinds of sports from soccer to basketball. A fun fact about Coco is that he is a triplet (2 sisters). Coco’s first year of camp was this past summer and he cannot wait to go back this year!

Kesem’s national staff of over 30 professionals is involved in all aspects of establishing and supporting each of our 100+ chapters nationwide as well as the training and oversight of all college student leaders. Our leadership program has been developed over the last 17 years and, while both rigorous and demanding, is focused on providing the highest level of support, service and safety for the children who participate in our programs.
The Kesem Program Director for this chapter (see below) is involved in all aspects of camp and our additional services. While your local student leaders are your primary contact for questions, you are also welcome and encouraged to contact their Program Director with other specific questions.
Abi joined the Camp Kesem National team as a Regional Program Director in 2016. Her first experience of Kesem was in 2005 as a camper at Camp Kesem at Indiana University. After losing her father to cancer in 2010, Abi was inspired to give back by becoming a Camp Kesem counselor in college. In the years following, Abi went to Indiana University and was able to be a Coordinator for three years and served as Co-Director her senior year. She graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors of Arts in Telecommunications. Originally from San Diego, California, Abi now resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.
